A favorite among environmentalists, jute has a negligible carbon footprint. It is also biodegradable and 100% compostable. The fibers are first extracted by a process called retting wherein jute stems are bundled together and immersed in low, running water. After which, in a process called stripping, the non-fibrous matter is scraped off, while the fibers found inside the jute stem are retained for weaving by talented women artisans from India.
