I am Hala

Hala is a textured handwoven cotton and braided jute basket.

The fibers are first extracted by a process called retting wherein jute stems are bundled together and immersed in low, running water. After which, in a process called stripping, the non-fibrous matter is scraped off, while the fibers found inside the jute stem are retained for hand braiding by talented women artisans from India. The textile is a result of skilful hand-weaving, a strenuous process that requires perfect rhythm and coordination.
